I Go Out Walking After Midnight, Out in the Moonlight

Some of you may have recognized my title from the Patsy Cline song, “Walking After Midnight.” However, this story has nothing to do with Patsy Cline even though I am a huge fan of hers. It is actually about an event that took place last week at our house.

If this event had turned out differently; there is a good chance that I would still be sitting in the fetal position, rocking back and forth and muttering incoherent sentences somewhere.

I’ve mentioned before in the story You Can Sleep With Me Forever that my 5 year old son, Bency, has sneaked into my husband and I’s bed almost every night of his life. On the nights that this doesn’t happen, he sleepwalks, and we find him somewhere else other than his bed.

Most of the locations are pretty tame:

the living room floor

his bedroom floor

or a living room chair

or a living room chair

However, there was the time that we almost called the police. One night as my husband and I were getting ready to go to bed, I looked in Bency’s room. He was not there! We began searching the house for him everywhere. We looked in every room, every closet and under the beds. No Bency! As I was starting to come unglued I happened to look in the attic playroom and lo and behold there was Bency fast asleep.

We have also had a few instances where Bency has sleepwalked downstairs while my husband and I are still awake watching television. Bency has walked into the living room, pulled down his pants and has come close to peeing on a chair. Thanks to my husband and I’s quick reaction times we have been able to escort him into the bathroom, wake him up enough that he is able to use the toilet. Bency has never had any recollection of any of these occurrences happening!

Now onto my story of what happened last week. My husband and I were in the living room watching television. The kids had been in bed for a few hours. All of a sudden we heard footsteps coming down the stairs that we assumed had to be Bency. Instead of the footsteps entering the living room they went the other direction in the house and we heard the basement door open. My husband and I each shot each other a quizzical glance and quickly got up and bounded to the basement door. When we looked downstairs we saw Bency standing at the bottom of the stairs looking around in a daze.

We asked him what he was doing and he answered with, “Oh nothing, just going to go to the bathroom.”

We responded with, “No, No Buddy. You’re in the basement. There’s no bathroom down there. Come back upstairs and we’ll help you into the bathroom.”

So Bency gingerly made his way back up the stairs and my husband helped him into the bathroom.

But what happened next will explain why if we hadn’t found him right away and ushered him into the bathroom would have caused me some serious cleaning and possibly mental toil.

Bency had explosive diarrhea.

In unrelated news. I finally finished my children’s book yesterday! I sent it off to be made up and it will be shipped to me soon. If everything looks good, I will be holding a giveaway on my blog’s 1 year anniversary July 6th! Here’s a sneak peak of the cover:

  1. Good heads up on catching Bency before Disaster exploded !!! The joy of having children ……. Is expecting the UNEXPECTED !!! I love your book cover … can’t wait to see the finished product of your creativity !!

  2. Melissa, I give you and your hubby sooooo much credit for preventing a major accident. Who knows what would’ve happen if you didn’t catch Bency in time? The basement would’ve probably been super stinky! 😉

On a side note, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your book cover. The illustration is amazing! I hope you decide to publish it one day. Maybe I’ll see it on Amazon soon . . .
Also, sorry for not showing up here lately. My son just celebrated his 4th birthday this past weekend so it was crazy busy!

  3. OMG I laughed out loud at the transition from “explosive diarrhea” to “children’s book” to “what’s in the bucket?”

You are such a fab writer Melissa, I would just love to read your book. 🙂

Also in related news – have you and your fam ever read 50 Below Zero by Robert Munsch? I feel like your sleep walking son would really appreciate it!

    • Now that I read that over that really was a rather hilarious transition! Now people are going to think that there is diarrhea in the bucket!!! Oh boy!! I can’t stop laughing! As for the book…no, we have not read it! I actually didn’t realize Robert Munsch had so many books. The only one we own is Good Families Don’t Fart. I am definitely going to go find this one! Thanks for the info!!

  4. What a wacky transition!
What does the doctor say about sleepwalking? I am sure it must upset you as it could get dangerous. I don’t mean the diarrhea though that would have been fun but maybe him leaving the house.
    Cool pic!

    • I know, I know!! I really need to think things through more!! As for the sleepwalking, I have never brought it up to the doctor before. I never saw it as a huge problem since he usually ended up in safe places. However, after this last incident I will be bringing it up at his check-up next month….that would not have been fun!!! haha!!

  5. Oh. My. Goodness!! Mr. T is the very occasional sleepwalker, but he never makes it very far. The guest room or the living room is where he tends to end up. But, holy moley…you don’t know how many blessings I am counting right now!! You’re right, I think the fetal position would have been the only solution had you not caught him in time!

  6. oh! glad you both quickly realized that he was in the basement and that you prevented your basement from being dirty! I would be so scared if I couldn’t find Nate in our house. & I love the picture of your book cover! looks hilarious! can’t wait! 🙂

    • Thank you Ingrid!! Yes, that moment was very scary when I couldn’t find Bency!! Also, I just tried to comment on your blog and once again when I hit publish it brings me to a search engine page! I have no idea what is going on! Anyway, I love the gold accessories! I never would have thought of doing a book or notebook! Also, I love the new header! That is so funny about Nate! All of my children’s diets consisted mainly of crayons at some point in their life!

  7. Criminy you make me laugh!

I love the cover of the book! 🙂

I am waiting for the second book of all of these child related stories. Which may NOT be something you want to read to other kids. You don’t want to give them any ideas. 😉

  8. Good save, mom. There would have been lots and lots of bleach in your future if you hadn’t acted quickly! My stepbrother was once sleepwalking to the bathroom and he walked in the wrong door and peed on my stepsister.

I love your book cover. Maybe you could be the next JK Rowling?

  9. I hope it’s not explosive diarrhea in the bucket! haha! Zoe has night terrors that have caused similar issues because even though she looks awake, she’s totally asleep. It’s kind of freaky, right?! Glad everything was ok (and stayed sanitary) for you!

  10. All thanks to God for a Blessed ending result it could have been worse. Congrats on your first anniversary of blogging as well as your book. Celebrate All! Be Blessed, Mtetar

  11. You had me so worried there Melissa… and then you got me! Oh, I just burst out laughing! Can’t wait for your book and a chance to win it! Hmmm, you got me thinking. Wish I could give away some of my treats…

  12. Oh Mel – the pictures priceless, the story of little Bency napping anywhere, or deciding where he thinks he will relieve himself..precious. The book cover amazing – didn’t see your camera the other morning. x 😉

  13. This one made me laugh so hard. You always remind me of something. When I was about ten I spent the night at my cousin Elaine’s. She had a teen age brother Tom and while we were in bed he came home from I think a night of partying. I heard him come up the steps in the pitch dark and walk over to our bed. He then peed right on Elaine’s face. I was so glad I lost the fight on who got to sleep on the outside of the bed.

    • Oh Liz!! This one seriously made me laugh and when I read your comment to my mom yesterday she was drinking coffee and spit it all over!! I’m so glad I always manage to bring up a funny memory for you…these are too good!

  14. Oh, the memories this brings back! My younger brother was a sleep walker, and the predicaments he wound up in (and put my parents in) were pretty crazy & are funny to look back on. There were several instances of him peeing in random spots, like the back of the bathroom door, the shower curtain and an attempt to pee off the stairs in his sleep. LOL Once they found him in the morning, draped over the stairs like a slinky that had unraveled during the night. He was a DEEP sleeper, so never recalled anything he did.

I’m sure your book is great! I know you’re entertaining to read, regardless of what you’re writing. 🙂

    • Thank you Keisha!! Those stories of your brother are too funny! I once found Bency at the very top of the stairs. If he had moved one inch he would have rolled down the stairs! Does your brother still sleep walk or did he outgrow it?

      • I think he outgrew it by his teens, as I don’t recall him doing it past middle school age. He is still a VERY deep sleeper, though, and does sometimes talk in his sleep. He’s 29 now, but I doubt he’s stopped since the days when he’d fall asleep on my parents’ couch after a big meal when he was in his early 20s. 🙂

  15. Good catch on the explosive diarrhea! Wow.

I had no idea you had written a children’s book – that is fantastic! I love the cover and I cannot wait to hear more about it.
